Dr. Barney J. Stern, MD is a graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He trained in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital and neurology at Strong Memorial Hospital. He is certified in internal medicine, neurology, and vascular neurology. Dr. Stern is a Professor and the Vice-Chair for Strategic Planning in the Department of Neurology of Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Stern has a longstanding interest in neurosarcoidosis, has collaborated extensively with national and international sarcoidosis groups, and participated in clinical research efforts to better understand this neurological disorder. He has published and lectured extensively on the topic and has a national (international) referral practice. He was an invited participant to the 2015 NIH Workshop on high-risk sarcoidosis, which led to a publication of research priorities for conditions such as neurosarcoidosis. Dr. Stern has been involved in the activities of the Neurosarcoidosis Consortium, a group of neurologists focused on clinical care and research, and led the Consortium effort to establish criteria for the clinical diagnosis of neurosarcoidosis. He was the lead author of the Consortium’s Definition and Consensus Diagnostic Criteria for Neurosarcoidosis published in 2018 and was a participating investigator in the Consortium study on infliximab treatment. Dr. Stern is a co-investigator on Dr. Carlos Pardo’s NIH/NINDS research study investigating the pathophysiology of CNS sarcoidosis. Dr. Stern is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research. Dr. Stern provides ongoing care for approximately 300 neurosarcoidosis patients and evaluates two to four new neurosarcoidosis patients monthly.
