Laurie Gutmann, MD, FANA

Dr. Laurie Gutmann is Professor and Chair of Neurology and Co-Director of the Neuroscience Institute at Indiana University School of Medicine, leading a multidisciplinary approach to research, education, and clinical care. She is a part of the Clinical Coordinating Center for the NeuroNEXT (NIH Network of Excellence for Neurologic Clinical Trials), in charge of site support and management for the network, assisting with recruitment, retention, and diversity in trials plus network educational initiatives. She has been co-director of the NIH/NINDS funded Clinical Trials Methodology Course for over a decade, working with clinical researchers designing their first clinical trials. She currently serves as co-chair of the NIH/NHLBI RECOVER-Clinical Trials Steering Committee for post-acute sequelae of COVID. Her research focus has been in clinical studies of neuromuscular disorders, rare diseases, and acute stroke trials, with special interest in hereditary muscle and nerve disorders. Dr. Gutmann has published in multiple areas including clinical research outcomes, education, and policy. She spent 20 years at West Virginia University and 8 years as Professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Research at the University of Iowa. She worked for four years as a Program Officer in the NINDS/NIH Extramural Office of Clinical Research. National activities include former Director for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a member and chair of the ACGME Neurology RC, and on various ABMS committees. She is a Fellow in the ANA, the AAN, and the AANEM and has served on or led multiple committees for all three organizations. She received her BA from Oberlin College and her MD from West Virginia University. Her neurology residency and fellowship in EMG and neuromuscular diseases were at the University of Virginia.
