PLENARY SESSION: Autoimmune vs Infectious Encephalitis: Dilemmas and Solutions*
JEC
Time: 8:45 AM to 10:45 AM
Description
Encephalitis as a rare but devastating neurologic disease presents a challenge for both the clinician and researcher. Recent advances in molecular diagnostics and recent treatment consensus statements have made the approach to recognition and treatment more complex but more satisfying creating more prompt diagnosis and treatment options. However, pitfalls have also been revealed.
Objectives
Distinguish infectious encephalitis from autoimmune encephalitis.
Apply the treatments for autoimmune encephalitis and determine whether short-term versus long-term therapy is required.
Utilize imaging and serological testing to successfully diagnosis the correct illness.

Characterizing Delayed Neurotoxicity Syndromes Following Treatment with Anti-BCMA CAR-T Cell Therapies (Emerging Scholar Presentation)
DescriptionThis study investigates the clinical features and management of novel neurological side effects in a case series of multiple myeloma patients treated with CAR-T cells targeting B-cell maturation antigen.
Corticosteroids in Herpes Simplex Encephalitis, and Other Therapeutics in Viral Encephalitis: Lessons Learned
DescriptionThis course reviews the current evidence supporting the utility of immunomodulatory therapies for viral encephalitis and outlines possible future directions.
SpeakersEnhanced Diagnostic Precision in AE to Guide Prognosis and Treatment
DescriptionThis topic will cover antibody testing methodology and the risk for false positive results. It will also highlight the importance of antibody defined criteria given the variability in phenotypes and the need for molecular based definitions.
SpeakersProinflammatory Cytokines in the CSF Aneurysmal SAH Patients are Associated with Shunt Placement (Emerging Scholar Presentation)
DescriptionAn inflammatory cascade is activated within the central nervous system following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). In animal models, the presence of pro-inflammatory cytokines within the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is associated with CSF hypersecretion and post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus. We investigated the relationship between presence of pro-inflammatory cytokines within the CSF of patients with aSAH over time and persistent post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus requiring placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS). Persistence of several proinflammatory cytokines within the CSF is associated with increased risk of persistent post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus.
The Advantages and Pitfalls of Metagenomic Sequencing in Encephalitis
DescriptionMetagenomic sequencing is increasingly utilized for the diagnosis of CNS infections. Hence it is critical to develop an understand the different techniques, methods of analysis and the pros and cons of these techniques.
SpeakersTreatments and Trials in Autoimmune Encephalitis: The Urgent Need for Evidence
DescriptionWe will discuss the state of knowledge to guide approach to the treatment of Autoimmune Encephalitis, as well as ongoing international clinical trials in Autoimmune Encephalitis. Additionally, we will focus on access to off-label treatments internationally.
